Sports Card Prices: How to Find What Your Card Is Worth

Quick answer

Sports card prices depend on the exact card and grade: a 1986 Fleer Jordan #57 is $4,779 raw and $300,392 in PSA 10 (SportsCardsPro, Sept. 25, 2026).

What are the key facts?

  • What sets the price: The exact card (year, set, number, parallel), the player, and the condition or grade
  • Where to look up prices: Sold prices: eBay's price guide (completed sales, refreshed every 24 hours), SportsCardsPro, Card Ladder, Card Hedge
  • Raw vs PSA 10, typical gap: From 1.5× to over 300× across the 30+ rookie cards we track (SportsCardsPro, Sept. 25, 2026)
  • Market direction: Card Ladder's CL50 index fell 23% in 2022 and 9% in 2023; vintage baseball rose through 2025 (SI, Jan. 3, 2026)
  • Highest price ever paid: $12.932 million, 2007-08 Upper Deck Exquisite Dual Logoman of Jordan and Kobe, private sale, Aug. 23, 2025 (Wikipedia)

How to find the price of your sports card

The price of a sports card is what the same card, in the same condition, recently sold for. Asking prices on listings do not count. To get there:

  • Identify the exact card. The back gives the year, manufacturer, set and card number. On modern cards also check for a parallel: a colored or foil finish, a serial number such as 12/99, or an autograph. Each version has its own price. Our guide to spotting a rookie card shows where to look.
  • Judge the condition honestly, or use the grade on the label if the card is slabbed. A raw card with soft corners sells for a fraction of a graded copy.
  • Look up sold prices for that exact version and grade. eBay's price guide works from completed sales and uses accepted Best Offer amounts rather than listed prices, shows medians and up to two years of history, and refreshes every 24 hours. SportsCardsPro, Card Ladder and Card Hedge publish guide values by grade; Card Hedge alone lists about 800,000 baseball card entries.
  • Compare like with like. A PSA 9 price says nothing about a raw card, and a Prizm Silver price says nothing about the base card.

Why grade changes the price so much

The same card can be worth a few dollars or thousands depending on condition. PSA 10 price divided by raw price, from SportsCardsPro on Sept. 25, 2026:

  • 1955 Topps Roberto Clemente #164: about 373 times ($1,868 raw, $697,500 PSA 10).
  • 1951 Bowman Willie Mays #305: about 250 times ($2,526 raw, $632,255).
  • 1992 Upper Deck Shaquille O'Neal #1: about 217 times ($16 raw, $3,536).
  • 1986 Fleer Michael Jordan #57: about 63 times ($4,779 raw, $300,392).
  • 1989 Upper Deck Ken Griffey Jr. #1: about 46 times ($126 raw, $5,836).
  • 2011 Topps Update Mike Trout #US175: about 3.5 times ($271 raw, $961).
  • 2002 Panini Mega Craques Cristiano Ronaldo #137: about 1.5 times ($5,563 raw, $8,124).

The gap is widest for old cards, where few copies survived in top condition, and for heavily produced cards where the ordinary copy is nearly worthless but a perfect one is scarce. It is narrowest for scarce modern cards that were handled carefully from the start. What each grade means is on our PSA grading scale.

What sports cards are worth money

  • Rookie cards of the all-time greats, above all in high grade: every card above is a rookie card.
  • Vintage cards from before about 1980, when fewer cards were printed and fewer survived in good condition.
  • Scarce modern cards: autographs, patches and serial-numbered parallels. The most expensive basketball card ever sold, a 2007-08 Upper Deck Exquisite Dual Logoman of Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant graded PSA 6, went for $12.932 million in a private sale on Aug. 23, 2025 (Wikipedia).
  • High grades of cards that were printed in huge numbers. An ordinary 1989 Upper Deck Griffey Jr. is a $126 card; a PSA 10 is $5,836.

Common players from the late 1980s and early 1990s are the main exception to 'old means valuable'; the reasons are on our baseball card prices page. Our guide to what makes a sports card valuable covers the factors in more depth.

Are sports cards going down in value?

Some are, some are not. Card Ladder's CL50 index of prominent cards fell 23% in 2022 and another 9% in 2023, and modern cards took the biggest hits: SI's January 3, 2026 market review cites a 2003-04 Topps Chrome Refractor LeBron James rookie that dropped from nearly $300,000 to below $50,000. Iconic vintage cards held up better; the same review has a 1951 Bowman Mickey Mantle #253 in PSA 6 rising from $38,000 in early 2022 to $51,000 in late 2023, and says vintage baseball grew strongly through 2025.

One card shows how far the top of the modern boom has come down: All Vintage Cards puts the 2021 high for a PSA 10 1986 Fleer Michael Jordan at $738,000, and SportsCardsPro's value on Sept. 25, 2026 is $300,392. The SI review expects a possible pullback in 2026, with vintage expected to hold up better than modern if it happens. That is a forecast, not a fact.

Getting an identification before you price

Most pricing mistakes come from looking up the wrong version. Photograph the front flat in daylight with all four corners in frame, then the back so the card number and copyright line are readable. StarLens reads the player, year, set and number from the photo so you can look up the right version; the grade still has to come from the card's condition or its label. Keep raw cards in sleeves and holders while you research them; our card storage guide covers the basics.

FAQ

How can I find the price of my sports cards?

Identify the exact card from the back (year, set, number, any parallel), judge its condition or read its grade, then look up recent sold prices for that exact version and grade on eBay's price guide, SportsCardsPro, Card Ladder or Card Hedge.

What is the best way to price sports cards?

Use sold prices, not asking prices, for the same card in the same grade, and look at several recent sales rather than one. eBay's price guide, for example, uses accepted Best Offer amounts and completed sales, refreshed every 24 hours.

What sports cards are worth money?

Rookie cards of all-time greats, especially in high grade; vintage cards from before about 1980; autographs, patches and low serial-numbered parallels; and top-grade copies of widely printed cards. A PSA 10 1986 Fleer Jordan is $300,392 (SportsCardsPro, Sept. 25, 2026).

Are sports cards declining in value?

Modern cards fell sharply after 2021: the Card Ladder CL50 index lost 23% in 2022 and 9% in 2023. Iconic vintage cards held up and rose through 2025, according to SI's January 2026 review.
