Grades are quoted from the grading companies' own published standards. A grade describes condition; it is not a value and not a guarantee that two companies would agree.

What are the key facts?

  • Walk-in grading in the US: Rare. Most graders work by mail; in-person routes are drop-off points, card shows and Beckett's Plano, Texas headquarters by appointment
  • GameStop: Cards are graded by PSA; $20 per card plus shipping, about 75 business days, cards under $200 (Draftsim, March 16, 2026)
  • Beckett HQ, Texas: 2700 Summit Ave., Suite 100, Plano, TX 75074; drop-off by appointment; only Express open on Sept. 25, 2026 (Beckett notice)
  • Cheapest mail-in, major grader: SGC, $15 per card for cards up to $1,500, 40–50 business days (Phantom Display, July 28, 2026)
  • Cheapest PSA tier open: Standard, $59.99, 90–100 business days, cards up to $1,000 (Heavy via Yahoo Sports, Sept. 9, 2026)
  • Free grading: None found at any major grader

Can you get cards graded near you?

Usually not in the sense of walking in and leaving with a slab. The large graders work by mail, and the in-person options are drop-off points, card shows and a few company offices. Draftsim's March 16, 2026 roundup of in-person grading found these:

  • GameStop: you drop cards off in the store and they are sent to PSA for grading. Draftsim lists $20 per card plus shipping, about 75 business days, for cards valued under $200. PSA paused its own cheapest tiers on June 2, 2026 (Heavy via Yahoo Sports), and GameStop's page refused automated access on Sept. 25, 2026, so confirm the current price and whether the service is running before you go.
  • PSA at card shows: Draftsim says PSA often attends card shows, conventions and other events to take submissions; the price depends on the event.
  • Beckett, Plano, Texas: Beckett's notice on Sept. 25, 2026 says collectors can drop off eligible new submissions and pick up completed orders at its headquarters, 2700 Summit Ave., Suite 100, Plano, TX 75074, by appointment. Only Express grading was open; Base and Standard were paused.
  • PSA in Canada: Draftsim lists drop-off at PSA's Halifax, Nova Scotia office, with a minimum turnaround of 15 business days.
  • KSA, Canada: same-day grading at locations in Ontario and British Columbia for $112 CAD per card, no appointment needed (Draftsim).
  • Europe: PSA opened a facility in Frankfurt, Germany on Sept. 15, 2026 offering all its service levels (SI, Sept. 9, 2026). Draftsim also lists GetGraded in the UK (£18 per card, 2–5 business days) and GRAAD in Milan (from €45, same day available).

How much does it cost to grade a card?

Prices per card at the main graders, with dates:

  • PSA (Heavy via Yahoo Sports and SI, Sept. 9, 2026): Standard $59.99 (up to $1,000 value, 90–100 business days); Priority $79.99 (up to $1,500); Express $199 (up to $2,500); Premier $599 (up to $10,000); Premium from $999.
  • SGC (Phantom Display, July 28, 2026): $15 for cards up to $1,500 (40–50 business days); $85 up to $3,500; $150 up to $3,500 in 2–3 business days; $250 up to $7,500.
  • Beckett: only Express open on Sept. 25, 2026, and its price list was offline; see our Beckett page.
  • In person: Draftsim's rule of thumb (March 2026) is more than $100 per card for same-day service, and as little as about $25 if you can wait.

On top of the fee, budget for shipping and insurance both ways, and for an upcharge if the card turns out to be worth more than your tier allows. The full PSA breakdown is on our PSA grading cost page.

Mail-in, drop-off or card show: which to use

  • Cards worth under about $200 after grading: a drop-off program or SGC's $15 tier keeps the fee small relative to the card. Many cards in this range are not worth grading at all; run the break-even check below first.
  • Cards worth $200 to $1,500: mail-in to PSA (Standard or Priority) or SGC. Drop-off programs with a $200 cap do not fit.
  • Cards worth more: choose the tier by the value the card would have in the grade you hope for, because the grader moves an underdeclared card up a tier and bills the difference. A card show is useful here mainly because you hand the card over in person instead of shipping it.
  • You need it fast: same-day or few-day service costs $100 or more per card (Draftsim, March 2026; SGC $150 for 2–3 days).

Is it worth grading? A quick break-even check

Grading pays when the graded price minus the raw price is more than the fee plus shipping. SportsCardsPro market prices from Sept. 25, 2026 (raw / grade 9 / PSA 10), against PSA's $59.99 Standard fee:

  • 2018 Topps Update Ronald Acuña Jr. #US250: $8 / $20 / $39. Even a 10 does not cover the fee.
  • 2020 Panini Prizm Joe Burrow #307: $15 / $28 / $110. Only a 10 pays, by about $35 before shipping.
  • 2018 Topps Shohei Ohtani #700: $130 / $271 / $916. A 9 or better pays.
  • 1996 Topps Kobe Bryant #138: $109 / $416 / $3,050. A 9 pays easily; a 10 would exceed Standard's $1,000 cap, so choose a higher tier.

Grading Pokémon and other trading card game cards

The same companies grade trading card game cards, and the costs above apply. They also grade well: GemRate data for the first half of 2025 showed trading card game cards, including Pokémon, earning a 10 in 50% of 7.2 million submissions, against 34% for sports cards (reported July 8, 2025 via Yahoo Sports).

Identify the card before you price or grade it

Take one straight photo of the front and one of the back, so the year, set and card number are readable. StarLens reads the player, set and number from the photo. Then match the result against the checks on this page before you trust any price.

How this page was made

Research and drafting for this page were assisted by AI and checked line by line against the sources listed below. Every price names its source and date. Some sites we wanted to cite (PSA, SportsCardsPro product pages, eBay, Beckett) refused automated access on Sept. 25, 2026; where that left a gap, the page says so instead of guessing.
